Manchester United is arguably one of the biggest clubs in England if not in Europe having won the English premier league 13 times, more than any other English club and also having won the UEFA Champions League twice.
During the era of Sir Alex Ferguson as the manager of Manchester United, they dominated the English Premier league and achieved feats like winning the league three times in a row twice, but all good things come to an end and in 2013, the 71-year-old Sir Alex Ferguson shocked the whole world by announcing his retirement after an amazing managerial career winning 38 trophies with Manchester United after being in charge for almost 27 years at the club.
It has been 9 years since his retirement that has seen Manchester United winning a measly three trophies namely the FA cup, league cup and the UEFA Europa League. They were once the favourites to win the premier league at the start of every new season during Sir Alex's time but haven't won it since his retirement. The club have appointed eight different managers after Sir Alex with the latest being Erik ten Hag, which clearly shows the difficulties that the club has faced with their managerial appointments.
Aside from the fact that a lot of managers failed to deliver at the club, a lot of fans and football journalists also blame the club's hierarchy for their rash and reckless decisions over the years in the transfer windows with big-money signings that failed to have an impact in the football team.
Now, the new 2022-2023 season has started that has seen Manchester United losing their first game at home to Brighton with their transfer targets snubbing them for better clubs. In short Manchester United isn't the same as before where new up-and-coming talents dreamed about playing for the Manchester United football team. It has now become just a big club in England and is at best the second choice for world-class footballers or up-and-coming talents.
Manchester United fans still hope that their club with such a remarkable history will one day return to its glory days but with other dominant clubs in England such as Manchester City and Liverpool, it is difficult to see it in the foreseeable future.
